The independent kingdom of Bhutan is located in Southeast Asia. It is situated between India in the south and Tibet in the north. The kingdom is also referred to as ‘The land of thundering Dragon’ high up between the peaks of the Himalayas. Thimphu is the capital of this fascinating country. 2300m above sea level, a large gate and the sputa’s welcome the visitor. Until 1960 Bhutan was protected from intruders due to its geographical locations and was totally cut off from the outside world.
Buddhism is the majority religion in Bhutan. There are many lhakhangs and monasteries. The Royal families, various government officials and constantly changing middle class inhabit Bhutan. These days the traffic is increasing but it is still bearable and few policemen are quite friendly.
In Bhutan, building styles are strictly adhered to the government-approved designs. By royal command the buildings must reflect traditional designs.
