Simtokha dzong is one most prominant feature and center of attraction in Thimphu city, as it is oldest dzong, institute. The other name of the dzong is “Sangak Zhabdon Phodrang”. It is built in 1629 by the legend Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. During the construction of this dzong, he had to go through lots of problems and suffered alot. He subdued one particular demon and burried into stone forever. Slowly as time passed by his disciples took care of dzongs and initiated every work .
Dzong is surrounded by three boundaries regions; Sha(Wangdiphodrang), Wang(Thimphu) and Pa(Paro). It is about 5km away from Thimphu city.
Dzong covers and area about 62 square metre. It is built over three floors where there is carving slate which depicts saints and philosophers. There is a huge Buddha stupa inside. The circles within it are painted in several colours, making it distinctive, represents the twelve months of the year. The path of the course of sun’s movement is painted as a line in the form of an ellipse in brick red colour; moons are also represented
Now this dzong functions as monastic as well as administrative center. Once there was an attack by five disgruntled former monks(lamas) in collaboration with armies of tibet who were against buddhist practises in the dzong under the control of Zhabdrung. Infact it was so sad for him , he was so innocent and pure follower of buddhism. Ultimately the invaders were defeated and the leader (palden lama) was dead in the battle. Another attack was in 1630 and this war was partially won by tibetans and few parts of dzong caught fire.
It is also believed a dzong protects against demons which was subdued by Namgyal and burried into stone. As usual there is tshechu which is being held annually . Every tourist comes here and cherish a moment.
